Teaching a Child to Tell Time (and Bedtime Clocks)

If the clocks in your house disagree, fix that before you argue with a five-year-old about bedtime. Pick one clock as the household’s reference, set every visible clock to it, and check it against an authoritative source rather than against your microwave. A child who has just learned to read a clock face will trust the face over the adult, every time — and they will find the slowest clock in the house within a week. Then teach the skill properly: hours first, then half hours, then five-minute counting, then elapsed time, which is the part bedtime actually runs on.

This is one of those homeschool situations where the annoyance and the lesson are the same object. A house where the oven says 7:52 and the wall clock says 7:44 is a measurement problem with a right answer, and a child old enough to argue about it is old enough to investigate it.

Why the clocks in one house drift apart

Three different kinds of clock live in a normal kitchen, and only one of them is checking itself.

Network-synced devices — phones, tablets, laptops, most smart speakers — set themselves from internet time servers and are effectively always right. Radio-controlled clocks listen for a broadcast signal: in North America, NIST’s station WWVB near Fort Collins, Colorado “broadcasts digital time codes on a 60 kHz carrier” that sets “wall clocks, clock radios and wristwatches,” and its signal carries the daylight-saving flag too, so those clocks change themselves in spring and autumn. Everything else — the oven, the microwave, the car, the battery clock in the hall, the alarm clock beside a bed — is a quartz oscillator that was set by hand once and has been quietly gaining or losing seconds ever since. Add a power cut, add a time change nobody applied to the car, and by February the house is spread across a quarter of an hour.

You can settle any dispute in ten seconds at time.gov, which NIST and the US Naval Observatory run as the public face of official US time, drawn from the UTC(NIST) scale kept in Boulder. That page is worth bookmarking on the family tablet, because it converts “because I said so” into “let’s go and look.”

What a child can actually do, and when

Time-telling is not one skill. It is four, learned over roughly three years, and most bedtime friction comes from expecting a child to use a skill they are two steps away from having.

  • O’clock. The short hand points at a number, the long hand points at twelve. Usually available around five, once a child can read numerals to twelve reliably.
  • Half past and quarter past. Requires the idea that the hour hand moves between numbers — the conceptual jump that trips most children, because at half past seven the short hand is nowhere near the seven.
  • Counting by fives around the face. Depends on skip-counting, which is why this lands after multiplication has started to make sense rather than before. It is the same skill as the counting patterns in everyday math at home, applied to a circle.
  • Elapsed time. “Twenty minutes from now” and “how long until.” This arrives last, often around eight or nine, and it is the one bedtime depends on entirely.

A geared demonstration clock is the most useful thing you can own for this: the hour hand advances as the child turns the minute hand, so the relationship stops being abstract. The bedtime problem, stated honestly

Here is what actually happens. A child learns to read a clock in October. By November they have noticed that the playroom clock runs four minutes behind the kitchen one, and that the microwave is the most generous device in the house. Bedtime negotiations move to whichever room holds the friendliest number. Nobody taught them this; it is a rational response to inconsistent instruments.

Two fixes, and you want both. Sync the visible clocks — genuinely all of them, including the car, because “the car says it’s early” is a real argument you will otherwise have. And separate the number from the routine: bedtime is a sequence that starts when the sequence starts, and the clock says when to begin it, not whether it is negotiable. A child who can read a clock has acquired a fact, not a vote.

The pre-reader in the next room

The younger sibling has the opposite problem: they cannot read any clock, so they have no way to tell 5:10am from 7:00am, and a number on a display means nothing to them at all. Giving a toddler a digital clock does not help. Giving them a colour does.

Turning the disagreement into a lesson

This is the part worth doing on purpose, because it is a genuine science lesson hiding in a domestic irritation, and it takes twenty minutes.

Walk the house with a notebook and write down what every clock says at the same moment. Ask the question that matters: which one is right, and how would we know? The answer is that “right” means agreeing with a reference, and the reference is not the biggest clock or the newest one — it is the standard that everything else is measured against. Open time.gov, compare, and let a child work out that the phone and the laptop agree because they are both asking the same authority, while the oven agrees with nobody because nobody has asked it anything since 2023.

That is calibration, and it generalizes immediately: it is why a kitchen scale gets zeroed, why a ruler starts at zero rather than at the end of the plastic, and why two thermometers on the same porch disagree. Older children can push further — how a quartz clock keeps time at all, why official time is kept in one place and distributed rather than measured locally. At what age should a child be able to tell time?

Most children read o’clock times around five, half and quarter hours around six or seven, and five-minute times around seven or eight once skip-counting is fluent. Elapsed time — “how long until” — usually comes last. Wide variation is normal, and lagging on this predicts nothing about maths ability generally.

Should my child have a clock in their bedroom?

Once they can read one, yes — it makes morning expectations concrete rather than a matter of opinion. Before that, a colour-changing wake clock does the job better, because it communicates one thing without requiring a skill they do not have.

Do I need to teach analog clocks at all?
